On December 4, the Israel Institute of Technology (Technion) will openly celebrate the genocide taking place in Gaza with a gala event in Sydney.
Speakers for the night include a Technion graduate “sharing experiences from their recent reserve duty” in the Israeli Defence Forces.
Another keynote is Israeli warhawk David Weinberg, Executive Director at Misgav: The Institute for National Security & Zionist Strategy. His speech is titled “Israel’s Resilience and Determination to Win”.
The event is being held to commemorate 100 years since Technion was founded in Haifa—as part of Zionist plans to form a colonial settler-state on stolen Palestinian land.
Technion played an important role in producing weapons used in the 1948 Nakba and became part of the military-scientific centre of the new Israeli state. The university has been central for the development of the Israeli weapons industry ever since.
Technion is deeply complicit in the genocide in Gaza, helping Israeli weapons firms such as Elbit and Rafael develop the technology currently being used to slaughter Palestinians and destroy all physical infrastructure.
The Technion helped develop the remote control D9 bulldozer used to demolish Palestinian homes in the occupied territories. Israel has used bulldozers to dig mass graves in Gaza, destroy structures and infrastructure and crush Palestinians to death.
Technion has numerous joint academic programs with the Israeli military and even developed a course marketing the Israeli weapons industry worldwide.
Many Australian universities, including UTS and Sydney Uni, have partnerships with Technion. A UTS Pro-Vice Chancellor, Prof. Michael Blumenstein, serves on the board of Technion Australia.
In October, the National Tertiary Education Union (NTEU) resolved to support an academic boycott of Israel and campaign to cut all ties between Australian and Israeli universities. We need to build on this momentum.
Stand up against this disgusting celebration of genocide. Demand our universities cut all ties with Technion and the Albanese government puts sanctions on Israel!
